Product Description

Sprocket 20B-3 z=16, with hub

The sprocket 20B-3 shown is a triplex (three-strand) sprocket with 16 teeth, made with a hub, for chain with a pitch of 1 1/4" / 31.75 mm. As a European manufacturer, Ozdowski supplies the sprocket in C45E steel (EN 10083-1), in accordance with DIN 8187 / ISO 606 - a version without tooth hardening, cheaper than the hardened variant and sufficient for many typical industrial applications.

Frequently asked questions

How often should chain tension be checked on a machine in operation?

In machines operating continuously, it is advisable to check the tension every few weeks, and in a newly installed drive - as early as after the first hours of operation, when the chain "beds in". A correctly tensioned chain has a slight, visible sag on the slack side - too tight a chain accelerates bearing wear, while too loose a chain increases the risk of it jumping off the sprocket.

Can a sprocket be reconditioned, e.g. by hardfacing worn teeth?

Technically, hardfacing and re-milling the teeth is possible, but in practice it is rarely cost-effective - the cost of reconditioning is often close to the price of a new sprocket, and restoring the full precision of the tooth profile requires specialist machining. In most cases, replacing it with a new sprocket is the quicker and safer solution.

How does the choice of the number of teeth affect vibration levels and drive operation?

A smaller number of teeth means fewer meshing points per revolution and larger fluctuations in the instantaneous chain speed (the so-called polygon effect), which results in higher vibration levels. Increasing the number of teeth of the sprocket (at the same pitch) smooths the operation of the drive, although it increases its overall dimensions.

Can a new chain be fitted on an old, worn sprocket?

Never do this. An old, deformed sprocket has altered tooth geometry and will force drastic mechanical stretching on the new chain. The rule is "new chain - new sprocket" - only then will the drive achieve maximum service life.

Where is this product used?

Typical applications of the 20B-3 sprocket: drives for pumps, mixers and industrial fans, as well as control systems for industrial gates and roller shutters, where resistance to continuous operation is required.
