Product Description
Sprocket 10B-3 z=57, with cast iron hub
The sprocket 10B-3 shown is a triplex (three-strand) sprocket with 57 teeth, made with a hub, for chain with a pitch of 5/8" / 15.88 mm. The material is grey cast iron - an economical solution with good vibration damping that proves itself in drives running at constant speed; the hub has a pilot bore that must be bored out individually to suit the shaft.

Frequently asked questions
When should I choose a sprocket with hub and when a flat one (plate wheel)?
Flat sprockets (plate wheels) are most often used where they are mounted onto an existing flange or drum, or when there is extremely little space on the shaft. We choose a sprocket with hub when it must reliably transmit high torque directly from the shaft via a key - the hub provides a longer contact surface.
When does tooth wear (the "shark fin" profile) mean the sprocket must be replaced?
If the teeth resemble pointed, tilted shark fins, the sprocket must be replaced immediately. Operating on such a profile can damage even a brand-new chain within a dozen or so days.
How do you select a sprocket when the machine lacks space for a larger pitch?
In such a situation, a better solution than increasing the pitch is often to use a multi-strand chain and sprocket of the same (smaller) pitch - several strands together carry a greater load without increasing the sprocket diameter.
How does a sprocket differ from a module spur gear?
A sprocket works with a roller chain and has a tooth profile matched to the chain rollers (standard DIN 8187/ISO 606), whereas a module spur gear meshes directly with another gear or a gear rack, has an involute tooth profile and parameters described by the module (standard DIN 780/ISO 54). These are two different power transmission systems, not interchangeable with each other.
Does a cast iron sprocket require a different chain than a steel sprocket of the same pitch?
No - the tooth geometry and pitch are identical to those of the steel version of the same size, so the cast iron sprocket works with the same chain. The difference lies in the material of the hub and rim: cast iron dampens vibrations better and is cheaper, but withstands impacts and operation at high rotational speeds less well than steel.
Where is this product used?
This type of sprocket is used in drives of agricultural and industrial machinery, including screw and bucket conveyors, feed conveyors, packaging machines and internal transport systems.
