V-belts

V-belts transmit power through friction between the side faces of the wedge and the walls of the pulley groove. A V-belt drive is easy to install, quiet, damps vibrations and protects the machine against overload, because the belt can slip if the drive jams. It is used in agricultural machinery, compressors, pumps, fans and machine tools.

V-belts with standardised sections - a replacement with no changes to the drive

Belt sections are standardised, so a belt with the same designation replaces a belt from another manufacturer with no changes to the drive. In one place you can buy classical, narrow, cogged and banded belts, as well as pulleys for them. Banded belts solve the problem of belts twisting and coming off in drives with vibrations, and cogged belts extend drive life on small pulleys.

Classical A, B, C, narrow SP, cogged X and banded V-belts

Classical belts A, B and C (DIN 2215) are traditional sections, still common in agricultural machinery. Narrow V-belts SPZ, SPA, SPB and SPC (DIN 7753 / ISO 4184) are taller relative to their width and transmit more power with a narrower pulley. Cogged belts XPZ, XPA, XPB and XPC have the narrow belt section and cogs on the inner side. The range is complemented by banded belts, automotive AVX10 and AVX13 belts and variable speed belts. V-belt length Li, Ld and La - how to read it when replacing a belt

Li is the inside length, Ld (Lp) - the datum length, measured at the level of the tension member, and La - the outside length. For one belt these values differ significantly, so when replacing a belt always compare the same type of length. For classical belts, the number after the letter, e.g. B42, indicates the inside length in inches.

Frequently asked questions about V-belts and their interchangeability

Will an SPB belt replace a B belt?

Not always. The sections have a similar width, but an SPB belt is taller and has a different datum length. The pulley groove decides whether they are interchangeable.

Do all belts have to be replaced in a multi-groove drive?

Yes. A new belt next to worn ones would be tensioned differently and carry a larger share of the load. An alternative is a banded belt.
