PolyChain GT pulleys

PolyChain GT pulleys are designed for Gates PolyChain GT polyurethane timing belts. These belts transmit very high power at a small width and need no lubrication, which is why they often replace chain drives. The tooth profile of the pulleys is matched to these belts - HTD 8M and 14M pulleys are not a substitute for them.

Replacing a chain with a PolyChain belt eliminates lubrication, dirt and regular tensioning, and the drive runs much more quietly. A narrower belt means narrower and lighter pulleys and less load on the shafts. Most pulleys have a Taper-Lock seat, so mounting and replacement require no machining. According to the product descriptions, the pulleys are made mainly of C45 steel, and individual large pulleys of cast iron.

Pulleys in two profiles: 8MGT with an 8 mm pitch and 14MGT with a 14 mm pitch, for several belt widths. Most pulleys have a Taper-Lock seat, and some a pilot bore. The belt width and seat size are given in the pulley name.

Why does a PolyChain belt need special pulleys?

The PolyChain GT belt has a different tooth profile from HTD and is very stiff. It does not mesh correctly on an HTD pulley, which shortens its life.

When should I choose 14MGT instead of 8MGT?

When an 8MGT drive would require a very wide belt or very large pulleys. The 14MGT belt transmits more torque at a smaller width.
