A coupling connects two coaxial shafts - most often the shaft of a motor or geared motor with the shaft of the driven machine - and transmits torque between them. A well-chosen coupling compensates for slight axis misalignments that arise during installation, and in its flexible version damps vibrations and shocks at start-up, protecting the motor and machine bearings.

Couplings assembled from parts - in case of failure you replace only the insert

You assemble couplings from parts, so in case of failure you buy only what has worn out - most often just the insert, without replacing the hubs. Pilot bore hubs can be matched to any shaft diameter, and Taper-Lock hubs can be fitted and removed in a few minutes, without boring the hole or cutting the keyway. Within one system and size you can combine hubs of different types, which gives great freedom when building and repairing a drive.

Jaw, HRC and gear shaft couplings - design and differences between systems

Jaw couplings have two hubs with jaws and an elastic spider between them. HRC couplings work in a similar way but have a different hub and insert geometry - parts of the two systems are not interchangeable. Gear couplings consist of two hubs with external teeth and a sleeve, which transmits high torque with compact dimensions. The main group also includes backlash-free couplings for servo drives and encoders, split couplings for rigid shaft connection, a one-way coupling and miniature couplings.

Pilot bore coupling hubs or hubs for a Taper-Lock bush

A pilot bore hub has a pilot bore that is bored out to the shaft diameter and completed with a keyway - this gives an accurate and durable fit. How do I choose a coupling?

The starting point is the drive torque with a margin for the operating conditions - starts under load, shocks, continuous operation. Then check whether the diameters of both shafts are within the bore range of the selected size.

Do the hubs have to be removed from the shafts to replace the insert?

Usually not. It is enough to move the hubs apart or shift one of the connected units far enough to take out the old insert and fit a new one.
