Offset links for chains

Offset links, also known as cranked links or half links, have bent plates that act as outer plates on one side and as inner plates on the other. This makes it possible to close a chain with an odd number of links.

Offset links - changing the chain length by one pitch

With ordinary links, the chain length always changes by two pitches. An offset link lets you change it by one, i.e. fit the chain more precisely. When the centre distance cannot be changed and the chain is too slack or too tight, you don't need to modify the tensioner or move the sprockets - one link is enough. The links are made of C45 steel, with components hardened separately before assembly.

Cranked links for roller, conveyor and PIV chains

Offset links for A-type and B-type roller chains, including heavy-duty and multiplex chains, as well as for hollow pin, double pitch, agricultural and PIV chains. Some links are available in a stainless version.

Does an offset link weaken the chain?

Yes. The bent plate is additionally subjected to bending, so a chain with an offset link has a lower strength. In heavily loaded drives it is better to set the centre distance for an even number of links.
