Spiral bevel gears

Spiral bevel gears have teeth with a curved rather than a straight line. They are chosen for right-angle gear drives that run faster or continuously, and wherever gear noise is a nuisance for operators.

Spiral bevel gears - quieter running and more torque than straight teeth

The curved tooth enters the mesh gradually, and the load is spread over several teeth at the same time. The gear drive therefore runs more quietly and evenly, and with the same gear size it transmits more torque than a straight-tooth pair. This means less vibration, slower wear and the option of using a smaller gear drive where space is limited.

Some gears are sold individually, marked LEFT or RIGHT in the name - a complete gear drive then requires one left and one right gear with the same number of teeth. What should I look out for when fitting a spiral pair?

Spiral teeth generate a higher axial force than straight teeth, so the shafts should have bearings able to take it, and the gears should be reliably secured against shifting on the shaft.
