Bevel gears transmit drive between shafts whose axes intersect at a right angle. They let you route the drive "around the corner" and change the rotational speed at the same time - without a chain, belt or additional intermediate shafts. You buy a pair designed for a specific ratio straight away, so you don't have to look for a matching pinion or check whether two gears from different manufacturers will work together. The same pair is available in several modules, which makes it easy to match the gear drive to the transmitted torque and the space in the housing. A bevel gear drive is compact and rigid, and unlike a belt or chain drive it needs no tensioning or periodic adjustment. They are also readily available spare parts for agricultural and workshop machinery.

Type A and type B straight bevel gears and spiral pairs

Straight-tooth pairs in two series: TYPE A with whole-number ratios and TYPE B, which also includes intermediate ratios. Both series are divided into subgroups by module. The SPIRAL group is intended for faster and quieter drives, and the PLASTIC group, with gears made of glass-fibre reinforced PA6 polyamide, for light mechanisms. How to choose a right-angle gear drive: ratio, module and tooth type

Start with the ratio, i.e. how many times slower or faster the output shaft should turn than the input shaft. Then choose the module - a larger module means a larger, stronger tooth and a larger gear. Finally, decide whether straight teeth are enough or whether a quiet, smooth-running spiral pair would be better. When replacing a worn gear drive, count the teeth on both gears and measure the outside diameter - that is enough to determine the module and series.

Frequently asked questions about bevel gears and combining series

Can I combine a type A gear with a type B gear?

No. The series differ in the choice of tooth counts, and bevel gears only work correctly in a pair designed for a given ratio. Choose both gears from the same series and the same module.

What does 16/32 in the name mean?

It is the number of teeth on the two gears of the pair: the smaller gear (pinion) has 16 teeth, and the larger one - 32. Such a pair halves the rotational speed.
